The Control of Information – Interview Warren Thornton and Paul Brooker.
How the rich and powerful shape the media and control your mind. By Dr. Judith Brown
My interview with Warren Thornton and Paul Brooker.
Warren is an ex-soldier turned journalist. He revealed in a scoop that the Canadian parliament hosted and applauded a Nazi soldier from the Second World War. The Canadian government had to make embarrassing apologies. Warren, however, was not applauded for his excellent investigative journalism. He was raided by the police and detained in a police cell. Eventually he was freed without charge, because he had done nothing wrong. Sadly this is becoming a regular pattern of behaviour in what our government calls a liberal democracy. We have seen a number of journalists who have been detained or arrested in the UK because they have revealed evidence that the government wants to hide.
This includes Julian Assange [1] here and Richard D. Hall [2] here both of whom have been detained for long periods. Assange was initially detained on a charge of rape that was frequently reported in the mainstream media, even though there was no evidence. He remained in prison even when his case collapsed, when his term for bail violations were served, without charge. He was eventually tried in the US for activities related to journalism, and he was released. Hall is in prison for harassing a person whom he was investigating. He visited the area outside her house once, but he did not talk to her. He took a photograph that he did not use and later destroyed, and he never contacted this person in any other way. He was not allowed to give evidence in his defence in his court case, before being found guilty. Both Assange and Hall were investigating cases in which government malfeasance had been, or may have been, revealed.
Of course, by researching information that is sensitive, Warren, Paul and I are at risk if authorities are offended by information that is revealed. This is true of all independent investigators. That is a risk we take because we want to contribute to the creation of a better world.
Warren and Paul interviewed me to talk about the extent of control of information by the European Union. It is a quite an extraordinary level of control, generously funded by EU taxpayers. Do not think that we in the UK are no longer paying for this surveillance and censorship. Many censorship ventures in Europe are jointly funded by the EU and Innovate UK. The UK still funds,we still censor. Additionally, British censorship legislation mirrors that found in the EU.
It is important to state my political position regarding the EU. I did not vote in the Brexit referendum. I did not vote because I had no opinion on whether things would be better if we were in or out of Europe, I am still of that opinion. I did not research the information recorded in this interview because I am or was a Brexiteer, but because I want my children and grandchildren to live in a free world.
Thank you, Warren and Paul, for a great interview, you were well prepared, and very professional. We would be much better informed if the BBC had interviewers like you.
